of the week: monday 20 november 2006

just a word of warning, anonymous readers: the fatty has a mccold today and is feeling semi-fantastic due to tylenol cold. let's see how this goes.

album of the week
the decemberists - the crane wife
i got into the decemberists after their last album, picaresque. i've only listened to the crane wife a handful of times, but i am enjoying it. this week i'm looking to get my hands on damien rice's new album, 9, that seems to be getting a lot of buzz and the foo fighters recent unplugged record. i'll share if i get them. (via rapidshare)

documentary of the week
this past weekend i watched when the levees broke: a requiem in four acts, a made-for-hbo documentary. the film is about the victims of katrina -- sort of a 'how things really happened' view and is directed by spike lee. it's long at four hours but if you break it up in pieces (like by each "act"), i really think it's worth seeing. i know now that i really didn't know the magnitude of what went down last year. the documentary is from early this past summer but still has much meaning. (via hbo)

fantasy comic books of the week
with the big spiderman 3 trailer up last week, i thought i'd stay with the comic book theme and bring you 9 comic crossovers we're still waiting to see (via bamkapow)

fun website of the week
it seems as though everyone either loves or hates this site. i think i could spend hours playing with it. for more creativity, search youtube for linerider - it's amazing what some people can do with a bit of time. (via linerider)

habs of the week
habs record since last we spoke: 3-1-0
if, at every writing of the monday of the week column, the habs have a winning record, we are playoff-bound this year and looking pretty good.
a busy week but a decent one altogether. forget about the egg the habs laid while in miami and we looked pretty good. all three wins were big wins against decent (if not good) teams. the no.1 line looks good as always as does the no.3 line. something needs to be done about the samsonov-kovalev pairing. i know kovalev is hurt but they look terrible - a change is needed. frankie b may as well take his time coming back to the lineup, i think dandy looks great back on 'd' and streit seems to be getting better with each passing game (or maybe it's just me). i have to say markov had a good week and seems to be finding his form. he better, because if i've said it once, i've said it a hundred times - souray is a liability defensively. morevoer, if i had to guess, i'd say souray is on his way out of town sometime this year, perhaps latest next summer. shelly, marky and homer are all ufa's at the end of the season, and i don't see us being able to sign them all. my guess would be that we'd use shelly as trade bait with maybe ryder in hopes of landing that big centre we are so lacking. just a guess, but we'll wait and see.
up this week for les boys is minny, buffalo and philly. the wild and sabres are top teams in the nhl right now so they should pose a good challenge. enjoy the hockey this week everyone.

inappropriate toy of the week
to go along with the stripper pole toy i linked to recently -- and perfect for the dora the explorer fan in your family. just in time for christmas! (via amazon)

news of the week
i can't think of a funny thing to say to go with this link, you'll just have to click it. (via discovery)

video game news of the week
halo 2 / halo 3 news of the week
i believe i mentioned it briefly last week, but for those who missed it: three big pieces of news were dropped by bungie and ms the same week the ps3 and wii launched. coincidence? first, on dec 4th a new halo 3 trailer will air during monday night football. second, new halo 2 multiplayer maps will be available exclusively to xbox 360 owners this spring. and finally, halo 3 will be publicly beta testing it's multiplayer starting in the spring as well. i can't wait... (via bungie)
ps3 news of the week
ps3's botched launch was friday, with shortages of the console evrywhere and only a handful of games ready at launch time. way to go, sony, you couldn't have pissed off more people if you tried. i just don't understand it.... (via thelastboss)

my cousin works at best buy in the gaming section. the big one in laval. he told me they only received 20 ps3 units - and 1 of them they raffled off to the staff, so really, only 19 were up for grabs. 40 some people spent the night outside on thursday, and he says they will receive a new shipment every 2 weeks but they don't know what day, and only anticipate 6 or 7 units per shipment. i recall a similar piss-off when ps2 came out...

oh, and fatty - is spike lee's documentary in theatres or in video stores?

wow, I'm chatty today... I forgot to mention that speaking of best buy, I was there on saturday and I saw the box set of MASH! I loved that show! AND I saw the box set of six feet under: the complete series and the box had little fake grass on top and a headstone of the life of the show. I'd buy it just for that - and the fact that it is crack. :)

i've heard that at some places people who had pre-orders of the ps3 have been turned away or told they'll have to wait until the store gets more. thats not a pre-order, that's bullshit.

spike lee's documentary should be in video stores, i saw it because i had taped it off of tmn.

i second the six feet under motion. if you haven't seen it, run to blockbuster and rent the first season.

Lol that beetle trade off bit is a good example of stuff I have been looking at in class for a few years now. I should tell my supervisor that he should use it as an example in Behavioural Ecology. It would get a few laughs anyway.

On a similar note (just to prove to all of you how much of a nerd I am), I went to a Behavioural Ecology conference two weeks ago, and the title of one of the presentations was "Why be horny?";this was about the ibex.

I can't figure out whether this was done on purpose or not since the presenter was really francophone (if you presented in one language, your PowerPoint had to be in the other), and that was the exact translation from French (except in French it doesn't sound so dirty).

Anyway, in this study, they found the opposite. Being horny was sexually selected for (the females chose the males with the biggest horns) since this was an honest indicator of good genes. The ones with the biggest horns were bigger and higher in the hierarchy.

I don't know about their testes mind you. I'm fairly certain, however, that the sexual activity of the ibex and the horny beetle are very different; therefore, being horny means something a little different for both of them.

How's that for being a nerd?

ya, that's nerdy alright.

I get TMN! I'll be on the look-out for it, I would be really interested in seeing it. Plus, I'm going to New Orleans in February.
